Located just three hours north of Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende is a world away from the hustle and bustle of Mexico's capital. Nestled in the Bajio mountains of central Mexico., for decades it was where Americans chose to spend their retirement years exploring the cobble-stoned streets and colorful buildings.

Over the past few years, the town has started to attract a new crowd, like young families who are charmed with the idyllic lifestyle, incredible schools, and the safety of San Miguel de Allende. As remote work becomes more commonplace, this has only accelerated and it's now proving to be a hugely popular home away from home for digital nomads, where they can work while the family plays.

An easy transition

Early expatriates to San Miguel de Allende were attracted by the numerous artist colonies, founded in the 1950s. Now the main attractions include year-round beautiful weather and stunning colonial homes, along with a thriving food scene and reliable internet – ideal for hopping on a video call.

Everything about the town is family-friendly, and many who visit intending to stay for a few short months end up spending several years here, enabling children to grow up bilingual in a multicultural environment.

The centerpiece of the town is Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, a grand, neo-Gothic 17th-century church, whose pink spires dominate the skyline. However, there's beauty to be found on each street, rooftop, and behind every door, with the town being home to thousands of perfectly manicured courtyards.

The area around the city doesn't disappoint either, with numerous charming towns just a short drive away, not to mention miles upon miles of rugged Mexican countryside that can all be explored on horseback.

Other must-visit areas nearby include Santiago de Querétaro, Bernal, and Guanajuato, the Capital of the state.
